Who can benefit from Music Therapy?
Music is a powerful emotional medium which can affect all people deeply. This seems to be unimpaired by illness or disability. Music Therapy can be effective with a range of clients including those with:
- Learning disabilities
- Autistic spectrum disorders
- Mental health problems
- Dementia and Alzheimer’s
- Physical difficulties
- Emotional problems
- Bereavement issues
- Life threatening and life limiting illnesses
- Eating disorders
- Problems related to abuse
- Challenging behaviour
Clients do not need any musical training or experience in order to benefit from Music Therapy and all age ranges from the very young to the elderly can benefit in a wide variety of settings. Therapists provide group or individual assessment and treat sessions according to the needs of each client.
As an intervention unfettered by the need for words, Music Therapy can be particularly effective in helping clients who have no speech or who lack the ability to talk about and discuss their emotions.
Music can help express what is often inexpressible in words.
