WHO ARE WE?

INTRODUCING OUR MUSIC THERAPISTS

Deborah Lugg completed her training in Music Therapy at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London in 2002, and has since been working for Cornwall Music Service, initially setting up pilot projects in schools, centres and the hospital paediatric unit. Though her work base is broad, she particularly enjoys working with adolescents. Her therapeutic approach has taken a particular focus, on using the voice and song to help understand yourself, as separate from another. Aside from therapy, Deborah is a keen musician, directs a gospel choir and is actively involved in church music. She also enjoys running, surfing and painting.

Robin Bates began working for us in 2004 after qualifying as a music therapist at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. He began to learn piano aged four sat on his Grandmother's lap, later studied with Betty Gripper in Coverack and he is still learning. He has worked as a musician with Youth Theatre on The Lizard, and for five years running composed award-winning scores for children's shows at Ruan Minor, where he now lives. He currently plays in a jazz band and has the privilege of being the regular accompanist for one of Cornwall's classic voices - Margaret Green. His work at The Curnow School in Redruth, the Child Development Centre at Treliske and at mainstream schools constantly reveals to him that music can be more potent than medicine for healing pain.

Carine Kelley did her first degree in Music Technology at Rose Bruford College in London. After graduating she worked for 7 years in a Care and support role with children, young adults and the elderly. She then trained as a Music Therapist under Prof Alison Levinge at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and this is her first professional post as a music therapist. Carine is working in mainstream and special schools and will be leading a pilot project introducing music therapy to parent/ toddler groups and is co-leading a new ensemble for adults with special needs.

Ruth Boulton  was awarded a scholarship to attend Chetham’s School of Music at the age of 9, winning ITV’s “Fanfare for Young Musicians” when just 11.  She was later awarded scholarships to study at Trinity College of Music with Nicholas Roth and the Royal Academy of Music with Nona Liddell, Erich Gruenberg and the Amadeus Quartet where she won the year 2 violin prize and the Manson prize for ensemble playing.  Early performance experience included many community concerts as a member of Yehudi Menuhin’s “Live Music Now!” scheme.  Ruth worked professionally in London, principally with the London Sinfonietta and John Elliot Gardener’s Orchestre Revolutionnnaire et Romantique, before qualifying as a Music Therapist at Guildhall School of Music and Drama.  As a therapist, Ruth has worked with both adults and children with mild and severe autism and communication difficulties within the NHS and privately, including setting up an innovative parent-run music therapy group for young children with diverse needs in Southend-on-Sea.  After a period of full time parenting and home-educating four children, Ruth is now working part-time at Nancealverne School in Penzance.  Ruth organizes PZ Home Ed, leads the Penzance Orchestral Society and has recently been performing with the mixed ability community dance theatre group Shallal.

Matt Davis was born in London in 1970 and first trained in the visual arts before becoming involved in improvised and experimental music. He has played extensively in this genre with various groups throughout the UK and Europe. He is currently a member of the contemporary music group Zeitkratzer. In 2006 he qualified from Roehampton University as a music therapist, subsequently working in various establishments in London. Prior this he had worked for several years as a play worker in a psycho-dynamically based inclusive play project. Matt joined the Cornwall Music Therapy Trust in 2009, re-locating to Cornwall after living in London and some years in Spain.

USER GROUP

We are pleased to announce the establishment of an enthusiastic User Group to advise on and evaluate the work and help shape the future of music therapy in Cornwall. This is a creative group which will meet quarterly, to discuss the current position of the work and raise ideas about how music therapy can develop and how the work can be supported. We have representatives such as parents, carers, teachers, nurses and musicians chaired by Jacqui Brant.

Next meeting to be held in Blantyre Day Centre, Truro Road, St Austell, on Thursday 11th June 2009 from 4.30pm  - 6.30pm
